After five years of competing in the Central American Surf Championship games in a variety of different countries, Playa Hermosa hosted the championship last December.
Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala all had competitive teams registered to compete for the championship. In order to welcome these guests and competitors, there was a Parade of Nations down M
ain Street of Jacó and a “sand ceremony” where each participating country combined sand from its beaches.
After a long battle for the title between many world renowned surfers, Costa Rica came out on top with a total of 13,085 points. Following in 2nd place was El Salvador with 8,850 points and not far behind them was Guatemala, finishing in 3rd place with 8,544 points.
Although Costa Rica won by a fairly large margin, José Ureña, President of the Federación de Surf de Costa Rica, stated that El Salvador and Guatemala had definitely stepped up their games this year.
Each year the Central American Surf Championships are hosted by a different participating country and next year it will be held in Guatemala during the months of February and August.
