Some times food or a recipe has the name of a country. Some times the country has nothing to do with this food or recipe.
Russian Beet Salad is not known in Russia. The Russian kitchen has a few recipes consisting of beets, among others the well known Borsj, a soup made of beets. Russians make a salad that has most of the ingredients of a Russian salad except for us so typical beet, this salad is called Olivie.
French Fries were not invented in France but in Belgium. The name French Fries exists only in the US. Like here in Costa Rica in Europe the name is an equivalent of “fried potatoes” or like in Belgium, France or Holland, only “fried”.
Naranja Holandesa is an ice cream invented by the milk distributor Dos Pinos in Costa Rica. The ice cream is made from orange and pineapple with pieces of chocolate and cookies. The company gave the name Holland due to the orange color that Holland uses as a symbol of the country.
Hamburger as we know it right now was invented in the US around 1885. In the 17th century Russian marines made meatballs popular in the harbor of Hamburg.
Some times the recipe originally really comes from the town or country mentioned.
Spaghetti Bologna really comes from Bologna. Holland or White Sauce really comes from Holland. Berliner really comes from Berlin.
