Driving Directions to Tamarindo
Driving Directions to Tamarindo from San Jose and Liberia: From Liberia International visitors may fly into Daniel Oduber International Airport (1) in Liberia on major airlines such as Delta, Continental, American and others. From the Liberia Airport, turn right heading towards Belen. Once you arrive in Belen (2), turn right following the signs to Tamarindo and other beaches such as Flamingo. Keep going straight until you hit a T in the small town of Santa Ana (3). Turn left staying on the paved road (if you go right, you will be on a dirt road). Keep going straight. You will pass Gas Station Oasis and then go over some low hills with your first views of the Pacific. The next town is Huacas (4). Keep going straight until you see the signs to Tamarindo and turn left. Keep going straight until the next town of Villareal (5) where you will see signs to Tamarindo and turn right (there is a large Hacienda Pinilla sign and a bus stop). Arrive in Tamarindo and pass Sushi Club on your left and turn left onto the dirt road following signs to Playa Langosta Costa Rica. Coastal Property Management is under Bar 1, on the 2nd floor of Plaza Tamarindo. You may also want to refer to the Tamarindo Map page for getting around once you arrive in Tamarindo. From San Jose ![]() International visitors may also fly in to Juan Santamaria International Airport (6) in San Jose. Juan Santamaria has daily flights from most major American airlines and also Copa and TACA as well as some European flights. From San Jose, take the Panamerican Highway North towards San Ramon (7). Keep going following the signs to Esparza. Pass through Esparza (8) and keep going straight following the signs to Limonal. In Limonal (9), turn left just past the Delta Gas Station following the signs to Nicoya, and the Puente Amistad Tempisque. Cross the bridge and keep going straight. There is one fork in the road that is poorly marked on the portion of road past the bridge. You want to go left at the fork. If you go right, there is a gas station but then the road dead ends in a small town. Keep going until you hit the T south of Nicoya. Turn right following the signs to Nicoya (10) and Santa Cruz (11). Pass through Nicoya and Santa Cruz and keep going to Belen (2). Once you arrive in Belen, turn left following the signs to Tamarindo and other beaches such as Flamingo. Keep going straight until you hit a T in the small town of Santa Ana (3). Turn left staying on the paved road (if you go right, you will be on a dirt road). Keep going straight. You will pass Gas Station Oasis and then go over some low hills with view your first views of the Pacific. The next town is Huacas (4). Keep going straight until you see the signs to Tamarindo and turn left. Alternate San Jose Tamarindo Route - Due to bridge closures and other issues, the Panamerican Highway becomes inoperable from time to time. This is mainly an issue during rainy season, although we always recommend you ask your rental car company about any road closures. When the Panamerican is out between Puntarenas and Limonal, the alternate route is the following: From San Jose, follow signs to San Ramon. Turn right in San Ramon following signs to Bajos de Rodriguez (you will pass through the center of San Ramon). On the other side of San Ramon, you will turn left following signs to Bajos de Rodriguez. Keep following the signs to Bajos de Rodriguez, then following the signs to La Fortuna. In La Fortuna, you will have to turn left and pass by the central park. Keep going following the sings to the volcano. Do not turn off onto the dirt road that leads to the Arenal Observatory, but keep going straight and the signs will say to Nuevo Arenal. The lake will be on your left and you will be following the curves. In Nuevo Arenal, turn right going up a steep hill and keep following the signs to Tilaran. You will continue around the lake. In Tilaran, turn right following the signs to Canas. Pass through Canas and you will dead end into the Panamerican Highway. Turn right towards Liberia. Once you hit Liberia turn left at the stop light and follow the directions above. You may also want to refer to the Tamarindo Map page for getting around once you arrive in Tamarindo. You may also take a commuter flight from San Jose to Tamarindo on either SANSA or Nature Air. We can arrange for someone to pick you up at the Tamarindo Airport, which is about 3 minutes from the center of town.
